A mattress is a valuable investment that helps you get sound sleep that eventually translates to better health. It is more than just a factor of good sleep it’s a source of wellness that you must work for to last long. One of the simplest ways to ensure a mattress’s long life is by cleaning it well. Mattresses can foster the presence of dust mites, dirt, dead skin, debris, and a lot more that demands regular cleaning.
The good part is that you don’t require professional cleaning services to clean your mattress, you can do it yourself. Be it a single bed mattress or a double one, all you need is to follow the following steps to keep your mattress clean and ready for years of good night’s sleep.
But, before that gather the cleaning supplies that you need to clean your mattress:
- Baking soda
- A duster or scrub brush
- Fresh lemon juice
- Salt
- A scrub
- A vacuum cleaner
Step 1-Remove and Wash
You need to strip off pillows, bed sheets, blankets, and any other bedding available. Put the used items in the machine while you work on your mattress. To get rid of stubborn stains, and dust mites amongst the others, wash your bedding in hot water.
Step 2- Vacuum the mattress
Let the vacuum do its magic by going over the entire surface of the mattress. Please do not ignore the sides and seams.
Step 3- Prepare and Apply
Create a thick paste by mixing lemon juice and salt and apply it to stains and spots present on your mattress. Let the paste stay for around 30 to 60 minutes. You can then wipe it with a clean cloth or through a brush. For strong stains, a scrub is a good option as it can help to lighten the stains or get rid of them completely.
Step 4- Bake your mattress
If you can, expose your mattress to direct sunlight by taking it out in an open space. This is the age-old tried and tested technique. Take some baking soda and spread it evenly over the mattress. If you have the space, then try to keep the mattress out in the sun for a minimum of 2 hours and more for the baking soda to dry. While the baking soda freshens your mattress, the sun stops the germs and dirt from multiplying. Next, take a clean cloth and wipe the dried baking soda.
For a double-sided mattress, repeat the same steps mentioned above.
Cleaning your mattress every 6 months can help you get a hygienic and clean mattress that may also improve its lifespan.
